Rapid City man arrested following Sunday night pursuit

RAPID CITY, S.D. — A Rapid City man was arrested following a pursuit on Sunday night.

The Rapid City police responded at 9:10 p.m. on May 3 to a CVS Pharmacy, located at 1415 Eglin Street, for a report of an individual who was refusing to leave the store after closing. Police were advised that the suspect was taking merchandise and placing it in a backpack before telling employees he was leaving with the items.

Once police arrived, they were told the suspect was leaving the scene in a Jeep Liberty that was in the store’s parking lot. The vehicle was seen leaving the parking lot at which point the police attempted a traffic stop. The vehicle did not stop.

The vehicle turned from Eglin Street to head north onto E. North Street and lost control while striking a curb in the area of E. North Street and E. Mall Drive, which deflated one of its tires.

The police then performed a Tactical Vehicle Intervention on the vehicle, ending the pursuit in the area of North Maple Avenue and E. Mall Drive. Police were able to remove the driver from the vehicle with no additional incidents.

The driver was identified as 23-year-old Jonathan Grant of Rapid City. The stolen items were recovered from the vehicle and Grant was placed under arrest for Aggravated Eluding, Theft and Failure to Vacate.

Grant was then transported to Pennington County Jail.
