Sturgis man arrested following late night pursuit

RAPID CITY, S.D. — A routine traffic stop turned into a pursuit and ultimately an arrest for a Sturgis man late Thursday night.

Around 11:30 p.m., RCPD observed a Cadillac passenger car in a parking lot near Curtis Street and Wood Avenue. The vehicle failed to come to a stop before entering the roadway onto Curtis Street, then turned onto Haines Avenue.

A traffic stop was attempted in the area of Haines Avenue and Knollwood Drive.

The vehicle stopped just prior to the Interstate-90 eastbound onramp and a female passenger exited the vehicle. As an officer began approaching the female, the male driver proceeded to turn onto the onramp and continue onto I-90.

Police pursued the vehicle eastbound on I-90.

While on the interstate, the driver was seen throwing an object from the vehicle. As the vehicle exited the interstate at Exit 62, police terminated the pursuit for safety reasons.

A short time later, police located the suspect vehicle near Tanglewood Lane and Bluebird Drive.

The suspect driver, identified as 47-year-old Daniel Blake of Sturgis, was located hiding under a porch in the backyard of a residence.

Blake was taken into custody and placed under arrest for Aggravated Eluding, Littering, Driving without a Valid License, Substitution License Plates, and an existing Warrant. He was transported to the Pennington County Jail.

A previous version of this story incorrectly stated that Daniel Blake is from Rapid City.
