Rapid City to approve new HRC hire

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Rapid City’s Human Relations Commission was disbanded for a short time, but has now been re-established with new leadership.

The city has been working to establish a new HR commission, and has started by hiring a full-time HRC coordinator, Malcolm Chapman.

The council still retains jurisdiction and approval to hire Chapman at his salary, which is higher than the proposed budget. With the help of Chapman, the HRC will continue to work to improve quality of life, and be a resource for fielding complaints of discrimination against the city.

“To look at the equity and the fairness of city practices, city employment, to extend that arm into the minority communities,” said Rapid City Mayor, Steve Allender. “To work together to bring education to the community about diversity.”

The council votes on Chapman’s salary Monday night.
