Rapid City goes “Bottoms Up” for cancer awareness

RAPID CITY S.D. — Nearly 100 people gathered at Founders Park on Saturday morning to raise funds and awareness for colon cancer.

The Bottoms Up for Colon Cancer Awareness 5K was organized by the Endoscopy Center and Rapid City Medical Center. According to Dr. Loyal Tillotson colon cancer is the third deadliest form of cancer, killing an estimated 50,000 people in the United States each year.

The best way to bring down the fatalities is awareness and early detection. This year’s 5K organizers hoped to raise $6,000 for early screenings through the American Cancer Society.

Colon cancer affects about five percent of the population and is most often found in adults over the age of 45.
