Rapid City firefighters kept busy Tuesday night with several fires in the area

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Several fires broke out across Rapid City between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, They were ignited amid recent inclement weather.

The Parking Lot Of The Rooster Sports ShopFirefighters responded to a total of six, with crews able to extinguish them quickly and keep damage relatively low.

One of them happened at The Rooster Sports Shop on West Main Street. Flames were seen coming from the back of the building and a burglar alarm reportedly went off.

“It was pushing into different portions of the building so they had to first gain access to the building through some security doors,” Fire Operations Division Chief Brian Povandra said. “And then pay really close attention to which direction the wind was blowing and trying to minimize the fire damage. Our fire and life safety division is investigating it.”

Strong winds had firefighters being very cautious as they tried to mitigate further spread, but they put it out. No injuries were reported from the scene, but officials are urging caution in relation to the dangerous winds.

“Everybody should be careful with ignition sources at all times,” Chief Povandra said. “But especially on those red flag days and when we’re having very windy conditions like we have experienced over the last couple of days.”

RCPD says it will work in conjunction with the fire department during the investigation, which is still ongoing.
