Rapid City Fire Department experiences busy Fourth of July weekend

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Between heat, dry conditions and wayward fireworks, fires are part of the Fourth of July holidays; this year was no exception in Rapid City.

The Rapid City Fire Department says it responded to 25 fires over the weekend; 11 were grass fires, three were mutual aid responses for structure fires outside of the city, one was for trash on the ground that was on fire. One of special concern for the fire department, ten were dumpster fires.

“One of the statistics that is very concerning is our dumpster fire numbers; we had 10 dumpster fires in the 3 day stretch,” said Lt. Jim Bussell of the Rapid City Fire Department. “We had 11 dumpster fires in all of 2019, total calendar year 2019, we had 11 and we had 10 over the weekend. We have had 16 dumpster fires since April 1 and again we only had 11 in 2019, so that’s a concerning trend for us.”

In all, there were 204 total calls for service during the three day weekend.
