Dexter also serves as a furry ball of joy for those working at Rapid City Fire Station 1.

Culberson adds, “He’s a fun-loving dog, very sweet – he likes to play.”

Day to day on the job can be stressful for first responders, so having the four-legged companion around can boost morale for all.

Dexter

“Just having a dog around to be able to come in with unconditional love…having a bad day, they walk up just looking for a pet, they don’t care and it just seems to help overall,” says Culberson. He goes on to say, “I think our employees, they enjoy him…he goes around all the offices guys here and guys and gals are in cooking in the kitchen and he knows when that time is, spends a lot of time there then, but for the most part he hangs out with me.”

Dexter works his way around the office – sniffing out smiles and treats.

“If you walk in every office in the front office, each office has a set of dog treats…he goes and weaves his way through him and just he’s just got one of those personalities. He’s just laid back. His favorite thing to do is just to get pets and and roll over and have somebody scratch his chest and his belly, ” says Culberson.

He even has his own spot in the chief’s vehicle and gets to ride everywhere with him, and is always ready for a quick pic for social media.

Culberson says, It’s been good. It’s been fun to try to take pictures of him and make sure we’re relaying what he does day in and day out and yeah, let’s face it, we all need something good and something that’s just fun.

The life of a fire dog isn’t all that rough especially when you get to hang out with your best friend all day.

“More to the new age dog that should be in the fire service, one that is loving and accepting and and just wants to be here just to enjoy life so. And he gives us quite a bit here too,” says Culberson.
