Rapid City Council considers two big items on Monday agenda

RAPID CITY, S.D. — The City Council has awarded a Rapid City company the contract for the new downtown lighting.

Swiftec Inc. won the job with a big amount of about $809,000.

And then to the next big item, a request by the city to consider an ordinance allowing Accessory Dwelling Units in residential areas.

One of the main concerns for this item was that people use the dwelling units like an Air B&B and take away from housing for Rapid City residents by only having rent for 28 days.

City Council member Lisa Modrick said “Why 28 days? And why not 90? Where was that in the discussion during these public meetings and why wouldn’t that have been considered? After all, it is a rental and if you are renting an apartment its usually a six month if you are lucky to get in on a term most are a year.”

The first reading of the ordinance was passed unanimously, but no date has been set for a final vote.
