Rapid City considers giving bees an extra hand
RAPID CITY, S.D. — Rapid City may soon become a Bee City USA affiliate if the Rapid City Public Works and Common Council approves of the necessary steps.
Bee City affiliates work to educate the public on the role and importance of pollinators. Over 150 food crops in the United States depend on pollinators.
“Nine out of every ten flowering plants has to be pollinated,” says Timothy Moran, DRB Beekeeping and Supplies owner. “One out of every three bites a human puts in their mouth has been pollinated by a pollinator. So the contribution that the bees and pollinators in general cannot be overemphasized.”
With the city-wide education the goal is to create an environment that promotes colony growth. Anyone can help protect bees by planting a variety of flowers and reducing the use of herbicides and pesticides.
