Rapid City Christian prepares for State ‘A’ Volleyball Tournament

Comets will play #1 Miller in the opening round on Thursday

RAPID CITY, S.D.  –  It’s been a long time coming for the Rapid City Christian volleyball team.

But the Comets have finally made it back to the state tournament for the first time since 1998.

After competing in one of the strongest regions all season long, the Comets are gearing up for the State ‘A’ Volleyball Tournament which will take place Nov. 15-17 in Sioux Falls.

The Comets are led by eighth grader Olivia Kieffer who has 271 kills this season.

Rapid City Christian entered the Region 8A Tournament as the No. 3 seed and upset both Hill City and St. Thomas More to qualify for the state tournament.

Rapid City Christian will once again be the underdogs at the state tournament as the Comets play top seed Miller in the opening round on Thursday at 11 a.m. The Comets are 25-12 on the year, while the Rustlers are 28-2.

“Everyone loves an underdog and I think that they’ve just embraced that,” Rapid City Christian volleyball coach Jessie Cantrell said. “But we’ve played a lot of good competition this season. And playing some of the ‘B’ schools that we’ve played like Faith and Kadoka, as well as, Hill City and STM, they’re ready to compete. They’ve been working hard. They’re mentally ready. They’re spiritually ready. They’re physically ready. So I think that they’ve embraced that title.”

“Right now, we’re working on our serve receive,” Rapid City Christian setter Riley Freeland said. “Getting ready for that. Changing up our defenses a little bit. We’re watching tape of them. We’ve seen what they can do. We know that our block has to be there.”
