RAPID CITY, S.D. – This week, Apr. 8 – 12, has been declared as “Week of the Child” in Rapid City by Mayor Steve Allender.

On Friday morning, over a dozen kids in the YMCA’s child care unit got a special visit from Rapid City Assistant Police Chief Don Hedrick. He sat dow n with them there and read a book called “Pig the Pug” which is about a greedy dog who learns how to share with others. Assistant Chief Hedrick says he thinks this book was a great message for his audience.

“It’s okay to compete. It’s okay to have fun but it’s also important to be a good winner and to be humble. Ans I think that’s an important lesson for everyone to learn. Reading is so important to a childs’ development that anything we can do to support that, we’re on board,” said Assistant Chief Hedrick.

Mayor Allender was unable to participate in today’s reading so he has rescheduled his date to come and read to the children to April 23rd.
