Rapid City building permit numbers reach record valuation total

RAPID CITY, S.D. — With recent record or near-record building permit valuations, Rapid City leaders are hopeful the yearly valuation total would be the highest ever.

Permit 1The city issued 235 permits in November with a valuation of just under 34.8 million dollars. That’s the third highest November on record.

With just one month remaining, the city has issued 3,910 building permits with a record valuation total of more than 362.1 million dollars.

The 2021 year-to-date valuation total far outdistances the previous mark of 330 million dollars that was in 2019.

“To the south, to the north and particularly to the east right up against Box Elder we do see ample development coming forward. The good news is that the distribution of commercial and residential seems to be equally throughout those three areas of the community,” says Rapid City Community Development Director Vicki Fisher.

The city has issued permits with annual valuation totals of more than 300 million dollars in five of the past six years.
