Ranchers donate over 300 pounds of beef to Hermosa School
HERMOSA, S.D. -Hermosa School is officially implementing the “Farm to School” program.
All the beef in the school’s cafeteria will be locally grown and processed. The program is teaching kids to make wise choices for their health and the local economy.
Students learn about where their food comes from and learn about how it impacts the agriculture community.
On Tuesday, the main course was spaghetti with ground beef and all the beef that will be served is ground. Meals will include spaghetti, hamburgers, and nachos with meat.
Three hundred and fifty pounds of beef was donated by the Robertson family who owns a ranch in Hermosa.
“We think it’s really important that they know where their beef comes from. One for the nutrition value, but two to promote agriculture because they are the next generation,” said rancher Tif Robertson.
The Robertsons say that there are 3 other ranchers in the Hermosa area that will also be donating beef, which will provide the students with locally grown beef through 2020.
“Every dollar spent on local beef goes back into the local economy. Everything local helps support local and keeps the community together,” said rancher, Tyler Robertson.
The fresh fruits and vegetables are also locally grown and come from a greenhouse in Custer.
“I think just eating good food makes you want to eat more good food,” said Food Service Director, Tammie Adam.
