(UPDATE: 3/18/21 @ 3:15 p.m.): Rapid City Police have publicly identified the man killed in Monday’s vehicle-versus-pedestrian crash as 51-year-old Paul “John” Jensen of Rapid City.
RAPID CITY, S.D. — Around 6:25 a.m. Monday morning, the Rapid City Police Department was dispatched to the intersection of Mount Rushmore Road and Saint Patrick Street for a vehicle-vs-pedestrian crash.
Upon arrival, police located three pedestrians and two vehicles that were involved in the crash.
After speaking to witnesses at the scene, law enforcement learned that a group of pedestrians were walking southbound in the middle of Mt. Rushmore Road, when a passenger vehicle slowed for them. A southbound Ford F-150 swerved to the right to avoid the slowing vehicle.
The F-150 struck one pedestrian before coming to rest on the right side of the road. A southbound SUV then struck a second and third pedestrian who were also on the road.
The first pedestrian refused medical transport, while the second and third pedestrians were transported to the hospital with serious injuries. The third pedestrian died of their injuries at the hospital.
RCPD Community Relations Specialist Brendyn Medina said that the department has, “turned up no evidence to suggest alcohol or drugs to be a factor on the part of the motorists.” Toxicology reports are pending on the victim.
The crash remains under active investigation by the RCPD’s Critical Accident Reconstruction Team. The name of the deceased has not made public pending notification of next-of-kin.
