Police looking for man who kidnapped, assaulted woman, took infant on high speed chase

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Rapid City police say they’re looking for Steven Jackson, the man who abducted and assaulted a woman in June before fleeing from police with their infant child unrestrained in the vehicle.

The RCPD says Jackson now has a felony warrant issued against him because he’s disobeyed the terms of his bond by repeatedly violating a no contact order.

They say the violations have happened since Jackson was released from jail following the pursuit incident, which happened on June 6 on I-90 near Exit 61.

Police initiated the chase after reports of a woman who was abducted and assaulted at the truck stop at Exit 61. She eventually escaped from the vehicle, but her infant was left inside when Jackson sped away.

Law enforcement located the vehicle and tried to stop it, but had to call off the pursuit several times as speeds reached over 100 mph.

Pennington County Deputies eventually were able to deploy road spikes, which slowed it down, but Jackson kept driving off road until he crashed in a ditch.

He then ran on foot and was eventually arrested after a foot chase. The baby was found unharmed.

Jackson is the father of the child. A temporary protection order was issued ordering removal of the child from Jackson’s custody. The victim of the assault and kidnapping was attempting to regain custody of the child when she met with Jackson prior to law enforcement being able to serve the temporary protection order.
