Police identify Rapid Creek drowning victim

Rapid City, S.D. – Around 6:50 a.m. on July 18th, police responded to Rapid Creek in the area of Steele Avenue and Omaha Street for a report of a drowning in Rapid Creek. On arrival police found an unresponsive female subject who had been pulled from the water onto the bank of the creek.

Medical units also responded and pronounced the woman dead on scene. Police believe alcohol is likely a factor in the drowning.

The deceased is identified as 30-year-old Edie Mackey of Rapid City.

Information gathered from witnesses indicates that Mackey and a male subject were highly intoxicated when they decided to go for a swim in the creek. An acquaintance happened upon the two and recognized they were in distress. The acquaintance was able to pull the male individual safely from the water, but was unable to save Mackey. The acquaintance then called 911 for assistance.

Detectives from the RCPD and Pennington County Sheriff’s Office continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.
