Police identify man shot in Sturgis home

STURGIS, S.D. — Police have released more information leading up to the fatal shooting that occurred in Sturgis early Sunday morning.

Chief of Police Geody VanDewater said in a statement Monday that the name of the man who died was 32-year-old Matthew Flagler of Sturgis.

Chief VanDewater said that Flagler was tampering with the vehicle of a Sturgis homeowner. When the homeowner asked Flagler to leave, he refused and entered the house as they were calling 911. Police say Flagler was shot as he was entering the home.

Chief VanDewater stresses that this is an isolated incident, and considers it to be a tragedy. The general community has nothing to worry about.

Sturgis police are still investigating the situation.
