Pit bull escapes yard, attacks police K9
Sunday, July 22 the Rapid City Police Department K9 unit was dispatched to assist the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office in a pursuit of a suspect who had abandoned the vehicle he was driving when PCSO initiated the pursuit. The K9 unit tracked the suspect from the abandoned vehicle to the area of 6th Street and Saint Cloud Street.
Upon arrival, to this area, a pit bull, who had escaped its yard ran at the police K9 from across the street and began attacking the police dog. In order to protect the police K9 and himself from the pit bull, the K9 officer fired his duty weapon at the pit bull. The police K9 was transported to a local veterinary office to receive emergency medical care.
Rapid City Police Department confirmed the pit bull has succumbed to its injuries sustained in the incident. No report was available at the time of this article on the apprehension of the suspect.
