Pine Ridge grocer allows SNAP users to shop online

PINE RIDGE, S.D. — Hundreds of grocery shoppers in rural South Dakota now have the option to order online using their SNAP benefits.

Buche Foods is now the first independent grocer in the state to accept SNAP payments online.

A recent study by the National Grocers Association shows that SNAP purchases were responsible for $1 billion in 2020 federal tax receipts and more than $975 million in state and local taxes.

Company president R.F. Buche says he’s excited to offer the online SNAP option.

“I think just being able to be the same as all our other customers, that’s what I think is important to our customers and that’s at least what is important to me. Our customers now, whether SNAP or not SNAP, they can shop online and do their groceries from home if that’s what they choose to do.”

Buche Foods employs more than 350 people around South Dakota.
