RAPID CITY, S.D.– Service men and women from the 235th Military Police Detention Company South Dakota Army National Guard were greeted by their friends and families and welcomed home with a ceremony at The Monument on Sunday.
Where they were
The 109 men and women were stationed in Cuba at Guantanamo Bay, the company’s first time out there. Three prior deployments were carried out in the past by the company:
- Ft Carson, Colorado in 2003
- Afghanistan in 2006
- Afghanistan again in 2013
How long they were gone
The group was deployed to Guantanamo Bay for 10 months. The length of the mission was not lost on the guests in attendance, with many of them excited to make up for the lost time as Thanksgiving and Christmas approach.

For the ceremony, the service members also heard from three special guest speakers: Senator Mike Rounds, Senator John Thune, and Governor Kristi Noem. Senator Rounds and Governor Noem shared stories of their family members who had also served in the National Guard.
