Pennington County withdraws support for scenic byway

RAPID CITY, S.D. — The Pennington County Commission withdrew its support for a proposed scenic byway considered from the Pine Ridge reservation and through portions of Custer and Pennington County.

In November, the commission gave their stamp of approval for the Crazy Horse Byway.

Since then, more questions have arisen between Pennington and Custer County with regard to the costs to both the county and private residents along the proposed byway.

Commissioners agree any byway laid out by the South Dakota Department of Transportation must clarify funding involved.

“Bottom line is on this agreement we asked them to make sure they say anything the state or federal that will cost the county money that they would stay,” said Deb Hadcock, commission chair.

The issue will be taken up again march 17, and until then, commissioners say there are a lot of details to work out.
