UPDATE: PCSO detains shooter, others in Hill City shooting incident

The Sheriff's Office is asking the public to allow them space to work in the area.

UPDATE (2/12/22 @ 6:57 p.m.): 33-year-old Joel Cornelison of Hill City was arrested and charged with three counts of aggravated assault and one count of first degree burglary in the shooting incident that occurred Saturday morning.

Charges are pending for others.


UPDATE (2/12/22 @ 1:43 p.m.): As of 11:20 a.m., the area surrounding Allen Gulch Road and Park Street has been sealed off and is being treated as a crime scene.

Officials in Hill City received the following message that was sent out via Code Red:

“Good morning, the Pennington County sheriffs office is investigating a shooting incident in Hill city this morning. They are staging their investigation near the 1880 train so that we ask the public to please avoid congregating in this area to allow space to conduct their work. At this time additional information is not available. Our thanks to law-enforcement and first responders for being on scene and for serving and protecting our community. The city is in communication with the sheriffs office and will work with law-enforcement officials to facilitate their efforts. Public Safety is our priority and we will continue to monitor this event. More information will be released as it becomes available. February 12, 2022 10:00am.”

Hill City is continuing to work with deputies on scene.

Additionally, the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office announced that they have multiple people detained in the incident, and several people have minor injuries from a physical fight but it doesn’t appear anyone was shot.

The shooter has been detained and charges are pending.


UPDATE (2/12/22 @ 11:00 a.m.): According to the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, the shooting occurred at a home on Allen Gulch Road in Hill City. Law enforcement was called to the scene shortly before 6 a.m. Saturday morning.


HILL CITY, S.D. — The Pennington County Sheriff’s Office is on scene in Hill City for a “shooting incident” in Hill City.

According to a Facebook post Saturday morning, the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office is on the scene of a “serious incident” and are staged at the 1880 Train. The Sheriff’s Office is asking to public to allow them space to work.

Black Hills Life Flight is currently on scene.

PCSO officials say that the incident looks to be that of a shooting.
