Pandemic prompts YFS to cancel Kids Fair

RAPID CITY, S.D. — For the second year in a row, Youth and Family Services (YFS) has cancelled one its biggest fundraisers – the Kids Fair.

The event draws upwards of 15,000 people over three days. But the YFS steering committee has decided the risk is still too high to put on the event in April.

With so much work and multiple agencies involved to make the Fair happen, the committee feels it doesn’t make sense to wait and see what happens, prompting the early decision.

Having to cancel a major fundraiser two years in a row puts quite a strain on YFS and the programs it offers, so now it’s looking for other ways to raise money.

“We’re looking to see if there’s some other things that we can incorporate to raise funds. We really hope the community understands why we’re cancelling this event and reaches out to help us meet the needs,” said Connie Olson, YFS Chief Development Officer.

The other major fundraiser for YFS, the “Diamonds in Denim” dinner theater, was also cancelled last year. This year, there will be a format change.

YFS is switching to a curbside dinner service and online auction that will go live starting this Thursday through next Tuesday the 23rd.
