Pactola beach closed due to high water levels

PENNINGTON COUNTY, S.D. — With the weekend right around the corner, the Black Hills National Forest Service is reminding the public that Pactola Beach is closed due to high water levels.

The water levels have not only closed the beach, also known as the Pactola Point Picnic Area, but also the North Boat Launch and the South Boat Ramp. Forest Service officials say boaters should also be aware of debris and other hazards in the lake.

The flooding and heavy rainfall this season have created many hazards throughout the forest, including wet roads and trails, washed out culverts and footbridges, and downed trees.

Those enjoying the outdoors this weekend, and going into the summer, should avoid wet and muddy trails and roads — even if they’re open. Hiking and riding on them can lead to damage that takes many years to repair.
