UPDATE: Suspect taken into custody in overnight shooting in downtown Rapid City

UPDATE (4:45 p.m.): 29-year-old Isaiah Mercado of Rapid City has been taken into custody for aggravated assault in relation to Saturday’s early morning shooting near Main Street and 9th Street.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation.

RAPID CITY, S.D.- Shortly before 2:00 a.m. Saturday morning, Rapid City Police officers responded to reports of shots fired at the intersection of Main Street and 9th Street.

Yellow police tape across a crime sceneOn arrival, they found a man who had been shot and suffered serious, non-life threatening injuries. He was transported to the hospital.

Police say the shooting appears to be the result of a fight between two parties who had been at a nearby bar. The shooter remains at large, but police do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the public.

Because the incident occurred at about the time bars were closing, investigators say there were dozens of bystanders present at the time of the shooting. They are asking anyone who was there or businesses that may have security camera footage of the incident to contact Rapid City Police at (605) 394-4131.
