Over 70 RCAS elementary schools students participate in “Girls on the Run 5K”
RAPID CITY, S.D. — On Saturday, Empowering You to Be (EmBe) held its annual “Girls on the Run 5K” at Founders Park.
Roughly 75 students ran just over three miles for the completion event in the girls after school program.
During the 10-week program, girls in third, fourth and fifth grade learn many skills like building confidence and how to be a good friend.
Organizers say that the run aspect actually spins over into the lessons the students learn.
“They have a real sense of accomplishment and know that in the future when they set a goal and they work really hard and they put the steps in place to meet that goal that they can do it in the future,” said Allison Sinning, the council director for EmBe. “So these are eight, nine and 10-year-olds and they’re running 3.1 miles, which is pretty amazing.”
The next program starts in September for area Rapid City Schools, with the next 5K taking place in November.
