Outdoor Campus West has a new outdoor archery range

There are so many exciting and unique things to do in the Black Hills no matter the season. In our new series “Into the Hills,” NewsCenter1’s Samantha Chadwell shows off great outdoor activities that anyone can try – right in their backyard.

RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Outdoor Campus West is proud to introduce its new outdoor archery range.

This is a completely outdoor range that is made up of 14 different stations. Each station has a target, a place to hang your bow, and a sign that allows you to warn other archers that you are collecting your arrow after you’ve taken a shot at the targets. The range is open from sunrise to sunset, seven days a week. The best part is, it’s all free. Keith Wintersteen with the Outdoor Campus says this is a great place to get out and practice your archery skills.

This is a completely free and unsupervised range, so there is no need to ask for a guide or check in with anyone before you hit the trail and start practicing on each of the different stations. “You don’t have to sign in; you don’t have to let anyone know. You can park down in the parking lot by the building and just walk up there with your equipment and shoot as much or as little as you want to. It’s also a great place to just take a hike sometime,” said Wintersteen.

If you’re new to archery and aren’t sure where to start, Wintersteen recommends taking your equipment to Cabelas, Scheels or Black Hills Archery before you come out to the range.

Funding for this project, which cost about $1.2 million, came from federal aid and private donations from people who are interested in archery and love the sport of it.
