OST president to attend Great Sioux Nation address in lieu of State of the Tribes

PINE RIDGE, S.D. – Oglala Sioux Tribe President Julian Bear Runner is joining other South Dakota tribal officials in boycotting the State of the Tribes address later this month.

On Thursday, leaders from several Sioux tribes announced their opposition to the State of the Tribes address held in Pierre, saying they do not support Secretary of Tribal Relations David Flute, who was invited to speak.

Bear Runner announced Friday he will join officials from the Cheyenne River, Crow Creek, Lower Brule, Rosebud, and Yankton governments at an alternate address called the “Great Sioux Nation Address” to be held in Fort Pierre.

“I respect the tribal leadership’s desire to gather,” Flute said in a statement. “I am looking forward to next week’s Tribal Summit as tribal chairmen, presidents, and the governor discuss important upcoming legislative issues.”
