OST Calico Community evacuated due to smoke, fire threat

PINE RIDGE, S.D. — The Oglala Sioux Tribe Emergency Management announced the Calico Community is being evacuated Saturday evening due to heavy smoke and fire threat to structures.

The Wakpamni Service Center is open to residents for shelter, and Highway 18 is closed off to traffic.

The latest update from the OST Emergency Management states crews are still working to get fire lines built around the fire as well as asking residents to stay out of the area until crews can get fire lines and back burns completed.

In the lower community areas, smoke is still present.

They ask everyone to please use caution traveling across Highway 18, and through the area from the Red Cloud High School to Calico Bridge.

Wakpamni CAP office is open for residents that need a place to go for the time being.
