One man killed in Custer County shooting near Pass Creek Road

The Custer County Sheriff's Office says the incident is under investigation, along with the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation.

CUSTER, S.D. — A 34-year-old man of Custer County died following a shooting incident that occurred during the evening hours on Sunday, March 27.

At 10:02 p.m., the Custer County Sheriff’s Office received a call from an adult male from his home in the Pass Creek Road area. The man said he had shot an intruder that was allegedly attacking him.

Custer County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the scene along with the Custer County Ambulance Service. The man who was shot was pronounced dead on the scene.

According to Custer County Sheriff Marty Mechaley, the man who shot the intruder has been cooperative with law enforcement.

No arrests have been made following the incident, according to Sheriff Mechaley, who says the incident is under investigation between the sheriff’s office and the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation.

The names of the those involved have not yet been released, as next of kin notification will take place. An autopsy will also be conducted in the next couple days.
