One dead, one seriously injured in two-vehicle crash in Butte County

BELLE FOURCHE, S.D. — There was a two-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 85 Friday afternoon that left one person dead and another seriously injured.

A total of three people were involved, two on a 2006 Harley Davidson trike and one driving a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu. The names of the three people involved are not yet being released pending notification of family members.

Preliminary information indicates that the Harley Davidson trike was northbound on U.S. Highway 85 when it was struck by the eastbound Chevrolet Malibu as the car attempted to cross the highway.

The 72-year-old female passenger on the trike was thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. The 75-year-old male driver of the trike sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to the Spearfish hospital. Neither occupant was wearing a helmet.

The 78-year-old female driver of the Chevrolet Malibu received minor injuries, but wasn’t transported to the hospital. She was wearing a seat belt.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investaging the incident and all information is preliminary at this time.
