One dead, one injured after prop firearm misfires on movie set

SANTA FE, N.M. — A woman was fatally shot and a man was injured when a prop firearm was discharged Thursday on the set of “Rust” that is filming in New Mexico.

The film’s director of photography, Halyna Hutchins, 42, was shot, and director Joel Souza, 48, was injured when a prop firearm was discharged by producer and actor Alec Baldwin, 68.

Hutchins was airlifted to a hospital, where she died. Souza was transported to the hospital by ambulance and is receiving emergency care.

“There was an accident today on the New Mexico set of Rust involving the misfire of a prop gun with blanks,” a spokesperson for Baldwin said in a statement. “Production has been halted for the time being. The safety of our cast and crew remains our top priority.”

Law officials say no charges have been filed, and the investigation is ongoing.
