One dead in two-vehicle crash on Highway 16

RAPID CITY, S.D. — One woman died in a two-vehicle crash Tuesday on Highway 16 near mile marker 60 west of Rapid City.

Preliminary crash information indicates that a 2010 Buick LaCrosse was eastbound on Highway 16 when the vehicle veered to the right and struck a guardrail and then crossed both eastbound lanes, went through the median and into the westbound lanes where it collided head-on with a westbound 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport.

The 78-year-old female driver of the Buick suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to a Rapid City hospital where she later died. She was not wearing a seatbelt.

The 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport was carrying two occupants, a 66-year-old male and a 65-year-old- female, and they had to be extricated from the vehicle. Both occupants were wearing seatbelts and suffered serious non-life threatening injuries, and were also transported to a Rapid City hospital.

The names of the three people involved are not yet being released pending notification of family members.

The crash is being investigated by the South Dakota Highway Patrol at this time, and all information is only preliminary.
