One dead in crash on Hwy. 18 west of Martin

MARTIN, S.D. — A 69-year-old man has died following a two-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 18 Saturday afternoon.

The man, driving a 2009 Smart Fortwo, was westbound on Hwy. 18 about 13 miles west of Martin when he crossed the center line and struck an eastbound 2018 Freightliner semi-truck.

He was thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. The man was not wearing a seat belt. His name is being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin.

The semi driver, a 56-year-old man, was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.

South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
