Police Chief Don Hedrick says as officers reached the scene, the subject began firing at them, striking a patrol car at least once. The officers returned fire, killing the suspect.

No officers were injured in the incident. The deceased has not been publicly identified, however, Pennington County Sheriff Kevin Thom did say the man had an outstanding active warrant for assault on law enforcement.

“This appears to be an attack on police officers at this time,” Chief Hedrick said in a Facebook video posted by Rapid City Police.

Pennington County Sheriff Kevin Thom says they will be assisting the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) as they conduct their investigation, which is standard protocol for an officer-involved shooting. Sheriff Thom confirms there were around 15 witnesses at the scene. South Dakota Highway Patrol was also on scene assisting.
