One dead following Friday afternoon motorcycle crash in West Rapid

RAPID CITY, S.D. — The Rapid City Police Department says they are investigating a fatal vehicle-versus-motorcycle accident that happened Friday afternoon.

Around 2:30 p.m. Friday July 16, RCPD responded to the accident in the 2600 block of West Main Street. After speaking to witnesses, police say the motorcyclist was westbound on West Main Street when it struck a passenger vehicle attempting to turn left out of a parking lot.

The motorcycle rider was taken to the hospital where he died as a result of his injuries. The man has been identified as 59-year-old Charles Peterson of Rapid City.

The driver of the passenger vehicle was also taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The circumstances of the crash remain under investigation by the RCPD’s Critical Accident Reconstruction Team (CART).
