One dead following family altercation on Pine Ridge

Yellow police tape across a crime scene

PINE RIDGE, S.D. — One brother is dead and the other detained after a fight early Wednesday morning on the Pine Ridge Reservation.

Just before 4:30 Wednesday morning, Oglala Sioux Tribe officers responded to reports of a fight between family members at a residence just south of Evergreen, a housing project between Porcupine and Sharps Corner.

After arriving at the residence, officers were informed by a witness that there had been an altercation between two family members in the home.

According to a release from the OST Department of Public Safety, officers observed a large amount of blood in the residence, where they soon located two males who had allegedly been involved in the altercation. Police say one man was struck with an unknown object and was found unconscious.

First responders performed CPR on the unconscious man and he was then transported to the Indian Health Service hospital in Pine Ridge by ambulance — where he was later pronounced dead.

A second man was also transported to IHS hospital but was treated and released for minor injuries. He was then transported to the Justice Center Jail.

According to OST DPS Chief Robert Ecoffey, the man was booked on tribal charges and could not specify if he was booked on charges related to this incident.

Names of those involved will not be released at this time as the investigation continues. OST DPS, Bureau of Indian Affairs Criminal Investigations Unit and Federal Bureau of Investigations are investigating the case.

This marks the second homicide investigation this year on the reservation.
