Oink Oink! It’s National Pig Day!
RAPID CITY, S.D. – Today is a day to celebrate our cute curly-tailed friend, the domesticated pig!
National Pig Day was started in 1972 by sisters Ellen Stanley and Mary Lynne Rave. They said they started the holiday “to accord the pig its rightful, though generally unrecognized, place as one of man’s most intellectual and domesticated animals.”
Pigs are super smart animals. Did you know that pigs are considered to be the fifth most intelligent animal in the world? They are equally as intelligent as chimpanzees. In a bunch of different studies, pigs have proved they have long-term memory, and can learn and understand a simple symbolic language.
To celebrate the holiday, you can visit a local farm or volunteer at a pig rescue farm. Some cities across the country even hold pig parades! A pig parade sounds like the cutest parade you could ever attend.
So let’s take today to appreciate the domesticated pig. “That’ll do pig, that’ll do.”
