UPDATE: Suspects involved in Wounded Knee shooting apprehended

UPDATE (2:20 p.m.): Five suspects involved in a shooting incident in the Wounded Knee area are now in custody, according to the OST Department of Public Safety, including Devin Bear Eagle, Lathan Lucero, two minors, and an unidentified fifth individual.

PINE RIDGE, S.D. — Authorities are actively searching for several suspects believed to be armed and dangerous in the Wounded Knee area.

The Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety says that officers responded to gunshots being fired in the area on Tuesday morning. When they arrived on scene, the suspects fled in a vehicle, and then on foot.

One of the suspects fired a high powered rifle at an officer — hitting his unit several times. All suspects fled into a field northeast of Wounded Knee housing. Officers are still in the area searching for them. Three have been identified as Lathan Lucero and two minor boys. An unidentified fifth suspect was captured soon after the search started.

The OST Department of Public Safety is asking the public to stay clear of the scene and to not pick up any passengers. They have asked anyone who has information or sees something suspicious to call dispatch at 911 or 605-867-5111.

Officials say the individuals should not be approached or apprehended.

(A previous version of this story said that a “fourth suspect was captured soon after the search started,” per information from OST officials. However, the OST Department of Public Safety has updated that information to say that it was instead a fifth, yet to be identified, suspect.)
