Oglala Sioux tribal council member dies
PINE RIDGE, S.D. – An Oglala Sioux tribal council member has passed away at the age of 56.
Collins Joseph “CJ” Clifford died this past Tuesday. It is not yet known how he died.
Clifford was a representative in the Wounded Knee district on the Pine Ridge Reservation. He was also a public relations officer with the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety.
The Department released a statement saying the following:
“He was a leader for the Oglala Sioux Tribe and for the Department of Public Safety. He was never afraid to speak up for what he believed in. He was a strong supporter and advocate for local control, self-determination, education, law enforcement, and for PL-638 to name a few.”
The statement continued:
“CJ was our department’s Public Relations Officer; he would do the KILI Radio show and came up with the phrase, always ending the show with:
‘If you’re going to drink and drive, drink water!’”
“With a heavy heart, the Department of Public Safety’s men and women in blue and the staff would like to extend our deepest condolences to family and friends of Collins “CJ” Clifford. His legacy will live forever,” the statement concluded.
