Off-duty deputy nabs Taco John’s hit-and-run suspect

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Police say a drunk man caused some trouble for Rapid City drivers Wednesday night.

A woman said she was in the Taco John’s drive-thru on Cambell Street when she was rear-ended by an SUV. The suspect took off, hitting the woman’s car once more.

But the mess didn’t stop there. An off-duty deputy spotted the man down the street at a red light. The suspect was pounding on someone’s driver’s side window.

According to witnesses, the suspect had stopped at the light but got out to confront the driver in front of him.

The deputy took the man to the ground, pinning him there until backup arrived.

Police say the suspect, 33-year-old Tyler Wright of Rapid City, smelled like alcohol, so they searched his vehicle. Inside, they found several open alcohol containers and a glass marijuana pipe.

Wright was charged with the following: driving under the influence, open container in a motor vehicle, possession of drug paraphernalia, and leaving the scene of an accident.
