Number of inmates serving time for drugs on the rise

PIERRE, S.D. — The South Dakota Department of Corrections announced that the percentage of inmates serving time for drugs has increased in the last five years.

In 2014, the total percentage of inmates serving time for drug charges was 21 percent, which increased to 28 percent this year.

When broken down further, the data shows that there has been an even larger increase among female inmates — 44 percent were serving time for drugs in 2014, compared to 64 percent today.
