North Dakota woman identified in fatal crash east of Rapid City

RAPID CITY, S.D. — A North Dakota woman has been identified as the person who died Thursday, September 9, in a one-vehicle crash east of Rapid City.

According to the South Dakota Highway Patrol, preliminary crash information indicates that a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado K1500 pickup was westbound on Highway 44 when the driver failed to negotiate a right turn. The vehicle went across the centerline, into a ditch and rolled.

Both vehicle occupants were not wearing seat belts and they were both thrown from the pickup.

Candace Arapahoe, 40 of New Town, North Dakota, was pronounced dead at the scene. Russell Martinez, 22, of Rapid City, sustained serious non-life threatening injuries. He was transferred to a Rapid City hospital.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash and all information is only preliminary at this time.
