PIERRE, S.D. – Active coronavirus cases in South Dakota drop below 800 as the death toll rises to 29.
Five additional Minnehaha residents have died from coronavirus-related complications. A total of 24 people have died in that county alone. Statewide, 29 have died.
A total of 2,779 cases have been confirmed in South Dakota, up 58 from Tuesday. Three of Wednesday’s new cases are West River – one in Oglala Lakota County, one in Ziebach County, and one in Todd County. Dewey County no longer reports any positive results.
Tuesday evening, President Rodney Bordeaux of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe declared an immediate lockdown in the Spring Creek Community “due to high exposure in the community.” Todd County has a total of seven confirmed cases; six are considered active. The county saw its first case in March but as of April 8, the patient was reported as recovered. The next case wasn’t confirmed until May 1.
Across the state, 773 cases are considered active. That number is down from 802 on Tuesday. An additional 82 people have recovered from the coronavirus, bringing the statewide total number of recovered to 1,977.
A total of 72 people are currently hospitalized in the state and a total of 230 people have ever been hospitalized due to COVID-19.
