New Season, Same Goal for defending state champion Post 22
RAPID CITY, S.D. — To say last summer was a magical one for the Post 22 baseball team would be a bit of an understatement.
The Hardhats had an unbelievable run by winning their 43rd state title before falling to Dubuque County, Iowa in the semifinals at the Central Plains Regional Tournament.
The Hardhats are hoping for the same kind of success this year as they gear up to defend their state title.
Post 22, who finished 57-12 last year, kicks off the season Thursday, May 2 on the road against the Gillette Post 42 Riders.
In fact, the Hardhats will play their first nine games on the road.
The Boys of Summer will have to replace several key players from last year including Cooper Bowman, Connor King and Zach Sumption.
But Post 22 still returns a core group of veterans such as Matthew Hegre and Alex Weaver, along with pitchers Dylan Richey and Tad Scherbenske.
“We still need to fill in a bunch of holes, short stop and center field,” Post 22 head coach Kelvin Torve said. “You know anytime you lose guys up the middle you have to fill that because those are key spots. We’ve got most of our pitching back. Yeah there’s holes but every year’s there’s holes. So it’s just the next guy up. You’ve got to get the job done. We’ve always had internal competition at Post 22. We do this year. We’ve got a lot of guys that could get varsity time this year.
Post 22’s home opener is scheduled for Wednesday, May 15 against the Gillette Riders.
