New law aims to help victims of human trafficking

PIERRE, S.D. — Governor Kristi Noem has signed a bill that aims to better protect and help victims of human trafficking.

Upon signing the bill Gov. Noem stated “People are not for sale in South Dakota.”

The bill had unanimous support in both the House and Senate.

Included in the new law:

-An amended criminal code to ensure traffickers are prosecuted.

-A path to a clean records for minor victims who have been convicted of crimes they were forced to commit.

-Increases access to victim resources, including reimbursement of medical and counseling expenses.
