New grant to help fire department perform tower rescues

RAPID CITY, S.D. — A new grant will allow the Rapid City Fire Department equip itself for dangerous tower rescues.

The new grant from Farm Credit Services of America will be used to buy equipment for Station 3, which is certified to perform tower rescues.

“[T]ower rescue is one of the most dangerous jobs in North America,” says Capt. Calen Maningas of the RCFD. A tower rescue is one that takes place on a free-standing structure that is not meant to be inhabited, such as a water, radio or cell phone tower.

There are about 70 registered “towers” in the area, but there may be more unregistered structures in the area the department could respond to.
