New coach will lead the Rapid City Stevens football team this season

RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Rapid City Stevens football team is set to kick off a new season in less than two weeks and the Raiders are under the guidance of their third head coach in as many seasons.

Michael Scott, an assistant coach with the Raiders last year, replaces Steve Svendsen who resigned after one season.

Scott inherits a team that finished 3-6 in the regular season last year and lost to Brandon Valley in the first round of the playoffs.

This year, coach Scott has made a few changes on both sides of the ball.

“We are still a spread offense with a couple of tweaks,” Stevens head football coach Michael Scott said. “Obviously, I wanted to have a little bit more balance in the play book where we were a vertical team last year. We’re going to continue to be a vertical team but I like to attack other areas offensively. Defensively, we’ve kind of added a few wrinkles to our scheme to hopefully help us play a lot faster and a little more physical in the trenches and with our backers.”

The Raiders will certainly have some holes to fill following the graduation of a decorated senior class that included quarterback Colton Hartford and receivers Bridger Nesbit and Michael Norman.

But coach Scott is confident that he has talented players ready to step up and help fill those holes including two players vying for the quarterback position.

“So you know we have a senior Joe Weber who’s been in the program,” Scott said. “Joe played a little bit of quarterback last year and he was a defensive back. He played really well for us. Joe has made the transition back over the offensive side of the ball and he’s doing a phenomenal job. We have a younger kid and he’s electric, Jed Jensen. I’ve watched this kid play coming up through the youth levels. He can sling it. He can run it. He can do it all. He has that moxie about him where you see him out there and you wouldn’t think that kid is a sophomore.”

Stevens will start the season with two games on the road.

The Raiders will play at Sioux Falls O‘Gorman on August 28 and then at Watertown on September 4.

Stevens will host Harrisburg on September 11 during the Rushmore Bowl.
