New bill aims to fund two Box Elder projects

BOX ELDER, S.D. — After two bills to fund major projects in Box Elder to support Ellsworth Air Force Base were ousted by the state legislature, sights are set on reviving the funds with another bill.

House Bill 1166 aims to appropriate two main projects in one-time funds.

First, 3.2 million dollars would go to the South Dakota Ellsworth Development Authority to construct the Liberty Center Wellness Facility.

And second, 5.8 million would go to fund sewer infrastructure and capacity improvements to accommodate the growth of the base.

The bills were either tabled or deferred to after the session, both moves essentially killing the original bills.

Box Elder is prepping for growth ahead of the B-21 mission set to land in South Dakota in the mid-2020’s.
