Nemo 500 Outhouse Races showcase creativity and joy
NEMO, S.D. — The 16th Annual Nemo 500 Outhouse Races took place at Nemo Guest Ranch Saturday afternoon.
Participants took part in a chili cookoff, shovel races, and of course, outhouse races. Three different divisions rolled, slid, and occasionally tumbled down the track, with men’s, women’s, and coed groups.
Racers, representing local black hills businesses and agencies, designed their outhouses any way they wanted, and five-person teams raced down the track. Evidently, Conquering a quest in an outhouse turns out to be much harder than it looks.
“You race around the track, and there’s a couple little obstacles and some things you have to do along the way, but it’s a lot of fun,” says Rick Holloway, Potentate with Naja Shrine. “I did it about 10 years ago, and I can tell you it’s really hard. It’s very, very hard to complete. It’s a lot of fun, though.”
This event helps raise money for Naja Shrine’s transportation fund, which helps gets children access to the medical care that they need.
